Radically Evangelical
Posted by Bobby Grow under Evangelicalism | Tags: Add new tag, Evangelicalism |I would consider myself an “Evangelical,” would you? This is a rather tough question to answer, I mean the term Evangelical is so amorphous that at points it seems to defy definition. I will try and parse out how I see myself as an evangelical later. But at the moment I thought I would provide a quote that describes a shade of evangelicalism labeled as “Radical Evangelicalism.” Maybe you fit this label, I can think of one guy who fits it quite well, from my perspective. Here is the description:
Since 1974, a group to the left of the “new” evangelicals has emerged. Richard Quebedeaux refers to them as “radical” evangelicals. They have been heavily influenced by the Catholic left (for example, the Berrigans), Jacques Ellul, and the nonviolent Anabaptist tradition as typified by John Howard Yoder. Coming out of the New Left of the 1960s, they see Christianity juxtaposed against culture. They go beyond the new evangelicals in their desire to reform society, insisting on the formation of alternative communities which will model the simple lifestyle, a sincere concern for the poor and oppressed, “first-priority commitment to one another as sisters and brothers in Christ, and a prophetic critique of the institutional church (conservative and liberal) and the capitalist system in general…. (David L. Smith, “A Handbook of Contemporary Theology,” 63)
Does this sound like you? Are you a radical evangelical? I don’t think I am, instead, if anything, I probably fit the label that Donald Bloesch has suggested as the “New Evangelical.” I will have to try and flesh this out later. Until then let me know if you think you fall within the tradition known as Evangelicalism. And if you do try and provide a description of what you think Evangelicalism is, and where you fall on its continuum (i.e. radical evangelical, new evangelical, etc.).

Sounds like a pretty apt description of me. Though I’ve never read the Berrigans and tend to think they were a little, well, off in certain ways.

Halden,
yeah when I read this description I immediatley thought of you
. I’ve never read the Berrigans either.

There seems to be a fuller description of “radical evangelicalism” that can be read here.
I don’t know if it’ll proove a useful category or not, I’ve only seen it used in these two places really.

When I was looking for work last year in UK churches I was most attracted by the church that advertized itself as: “Evangelical. We refuse to add any further adjectives to that descriptor.” All the others were “conservative evangelical”, “open evangelical” or “charismatic evangelical” and the qualifying adjective was emphasized hugely. Guess it shows what a broad term evangelical is, but also how much our flesh likes the boast in particulars. “I follow Paul, I follow Apollos…” I’ve long prefered the term radical evangelical to conservative evangelical (semper reformanda! - surely the gospel makes us the least conservative people on the planet.) But until your post Bobby I had no idea it technically refers to more lefty anabaptisty stuff. Can you be an Anglican radical evangelical? Hmm - might be stretching it a bit…

Halden,
Thanks for the link. I’ll have to give that a read. Yeah, I’m not sure about the usefulness of this category either; but then again, categorization, in general, has its respective strengths and weaknesses–I’m willing to give this category chance anyway. Although I must say there are certain about this category that I would certainly agree with.
Glen,
Until I read this chapter, I hadn’t heard of this designation either. I think you’re right on to say that anyone who proclaims the Gospel is quite radical.
Can you be an Anglican radical evangelical? Not unless you are willing to recant of your Reformation heritage, and re-identify with a “radical Reformation” heritage
.
